Manchester City opened their UEFA Champions League campaign with a controlled 2-0 victory over FC Porto at the Estádio do Dragão. Erling Haaland provided the decisive moments, scoring once in each half to secure all three points for the visitors.
Despite the final score, the match was far from a comfortable evening for City. Porto Show Fight in Physical Battles
Although Porto struggled to create attacking opportunities, they competed strongly in the physical aspects of the match.
The home side won 54% of the overall duels, compared with City’s 46%. They were particularly effective in the air, winning 12 of 23 aerial contests.
Porto also recorded 20 successful tackles compared with 18 from City.

The most impressive individual performance actually came from the losing side.
Diogo Costa produced an exceptional performance in goal, making eight saves, including five from inside the penalty area. Two of his interventions were classified as major saves.
His expected-goals-on-target numbers suggest that he prevented approximately 1.75 goals beyond what would normally have been expected from the quality of the shots faced.
Costa was also composed with the ball. He completed 39 of 48 passes and found teammates with 13 of 22 longer distribution attempts.
His contribution extended beyond traditional goalkeeping. He made one sweeper-keeper action and recorded 10 recoveries as City repeatedly delivered crosses and low balls into his defensive area.
A 9.5 rating was therefore a fitting reflection of his performance. Without Costa’s saves, City’s dominance in shots and expected goals could have produced a much wider margin.
