Ruben Amorim has reflected on his departure from Sporting and admitted that, if he had the opportunity to make the decision again today, he would handle some things differently.
On the eve of the match against Benfica, the Milan manager was asked about Sporting’s current situation and the changes taking place within the squad. Amorim said the team needs time to adapt to the changes under Rui Borges.
“They play very well and they are very strong. They need time to change many things. There were players who already knew each other’s movements almost instinctively and, obviously, a coach needs time,” Amorim said in an interview with Sport TV.
He also pointed out that Sporting continue to have significant attacking quality, although the team is going through a period of transition.
“They still have attacking ability, but obviously they are changing some things and people need to be patient. The cycle had not ended, but sometimes it is good to start making changes before it actually ends,” he explained.
Amorim also spoke about his departure from Sporting to Manchester United. The Portuguese coach acknowledged that he understands the frustration felt by some Sporting supporters following his decision to leave the club.
Looking back at the situation, Amorim admitted that he would approach his departure differently if he could make the decision again.
He nevertheless stressed that his connection with Sporting remains strong and that he continues to follow the club and the Portuguese league.
“I follow the league and the affection I have for Sporting is still there, even though they are still very angry with me. What they gave me and what I experienced there will not change,” Amorim said.
Despite the difficult circumstances surrounding his departure, Amorim made it clear that his memories of Sporting remain important to him. His time at the club was a significant period in his managerial career, and he continues to keep an eye on the team’s progress.
